ideological values, Treny became a literary model used by many
artists of the sixteenth, and especially of the seventeenth century.
Kochanowski was the greatest individual figure of Old Polish
literature. He was inspired by the Bible as well as by the Greek
and Roman heritage. Always, however, he enriched his poems
with his own original ideas, thoughts, feelings and words. He
introduced unknown genres, stylistic structures, and types of verse

(e.g. syllabic verse) to Polish literature. He was interested in the
outer world, social and political order, the everyday reality of
man, his existential problems, inner and personal experiences. He
spoke in the language of reflection and advice, seriousness and
humour, words of prayer or intimate confessions. Almost from the
very beginning he gained the respect of his readers and was very
popular, both in Poland and abroad.
